MILENA BOZHIKOVA

1959  - Born in Varna, Bulgaria

Education:
1978     - Graduated with medal for honours diploma from the High School of Music in Varna
1978 -79 - Student at the State Academy of Music, with piano and Musicology as major subjects, which I studied in parallel
1979     - After winning a competition, continued my studies at the P.I.Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory.
1984     - Graduated summa cum laude from Prof. Yury Nikolaevich Holopov's class in musicology.

Work experience:
1984-86 - Lecturer at the High School of Music in Varna and the Academy of Musical and Dance Art in Plovdiv (music analysis).
1987     - Research Fellow at the State Academy of Music.
1990     - Defended a dissertation on contemporary Bulgarian music, for a PhD.
1990-91 - Worked as an editor at the Balgarska muzika (Bulgarian Music) Journal.
1991-93 - Editor at the Politrade Publishing House.
1993-95 -  Led a polyphony course of lectures at the Paisii Hilendarski University in Shoumen.
1993     - Research Associate at the Institute of Art Studies.
An observer for the Kultura Weekly (1993-1998).
Presently I work as Associate Proffesor at the Institute of Art Studies with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
I am a member of the Union of the composers (section "Musicologists") and a member of the Union of jurnalists.

Awards:
Acadmical award for Art studies by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (2000).
Annual musicological award of the Union of Bulgarian composers ''A book of 1999" (for “Vassil Kazandjiev”, Sofia 1999, 440 p.)

Publications:



I work on the problems of musical theory, contemporary musical composition, style, analytical methods, musical anthropology and interpretation.

I have participated in a number of international seminars and scholarly conferences:
1. A seminar on electronic music in Gyor, Hungary, 1985.
2. An International scholarly conference within the International Music Festival "Varna summer", 1995.
3. Bulgarian-Austrian scholarly musical session "Vienna musical schools and the Bulgarian traditions: aspects of bringing together the Eastern and Western musical cultures", Sofia, 1998.
4. An International scholarly conferences "The music between the East and the West on the threshold of the XXI-th century", conducted within the International Music Festival "March Music Days", 1999.
5. An International scholarly conferences "Globalization of culture: Music and Multimedia", conducted within the International Music Festival "March Music Days", 2000.

I am the author of a couple of scholarly reviews and essays in the field of the musical theory and the ethnomusicology:
1. The information language in the ethnomusicology.
2. Musical-psychological aspects of the creative works of the Bulgarian composers.
3. The ideological cliche in Bulgarian professional music after 1944.
4. The folk song as an ideal and as an ideological cliche.

I have participated in group projects:
1. Contemporary musical culture (1993-1994).
2. Thesaurus of the contemporary music (1995-1997).
3. Methodological problems of the XX-th century music (1995-1997).
4. The dynamics of the musical processes during the 199Os (1997-1999).
